Problem

First responders are usually the first on the scene to face challenging, dangerous, and draining situations. They are also the first to reach out to disaster survivors and provide emotional and physical support to them. These duties, although essential to the entire community, are strenuous to first responders and with time put them at an increased risk of trauma. First responders are often faced with mental health challenges and career ending injuries. Unlike veterans, first responders do not have a national policy or protections in place to help them during times of mental health challenges and face many battles in receiving care before it is too late. Evidence indicates that the prevalence of post traumatic stress (PTS) is substantially higher among first responders than the general population. We as a society and individuals need to promote cultural changes by offering our lived experience and tips to create better outcomes for first responders, family members, and human resources teams overseeing stress or medical leaves.

Solution

While we have made strides through legislation such as Labor Code Section 3212.15 and SB 542. Labor Code 3212.15 which recently took effect on January 1, 2020, which creates a presumption for post traumatic stress injuries (PTSI) that has developed or manifested while working as a first responder. The presumption provides that the PTSI shall be presumed to arise out of and in the course of their employment. Those qualifying shall be awarded full compensation for their injury, including medical care and disability indemnity.

Resilient Core Foundation will provide training, education, and financial support to treatment programs for first responders experiencing post traumatic stress. Our training provides skills-acquisition and education that can be an incredible powerful step for first responders with PTS who are without acute safety/medical issues or severe debilitation but are nevertheless dealing with symptoms that intrude significantly upon daily functioning. If acute safety, medical, or debilitating concerns are present we will connect first responders with immediate our partnered medical services to fit their needs.

Why us?

Our founder, Heather Haney, is a successful and battle-tested first responder who is dedicated to serving those who serve our communities. Heather has served and continues to serve as a leadership and development instructor, defensive tactics instructor, SWAT team medic, and drug recognition expert. While getting her MBA, Heather developed a passion and calling for working with first responders who are experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Injuries.Heather, along with a group of others, had a bad experience seeking help as a first responder due to inadequate mental health training when dealing with first responders, stigma surrounding seeking help, and organizational culture within her department. While that was unfortunate, but at least the timing was serendipitous. Heather was looking for her next chapter, and the incident led her and a group of other first responders starting Resilient Core Foundation. With their partnerships and connections it seemed like a clear win. We were already well connected in the local law enforcement space from our combined years of experience. Based on their combined background and experience, Heather is confident that we have the network, resilience, and skillset needed to make Resilient Core Foundation a success.
